Japanese whisky importers and distributors

Update: I apologise for bringing this crushingly dull post to the top again but there are some important additions to the Ichiro's Malt and Karuizawa sections.
This page lists all the distributors of Japanese whisky I come across. Please send details of importers and distributors to japanesewhisky at gmail.com.

There is a lot of innovation among European importers at the moment, allowing Japanese whisky unprecedented access. Two companies that are at the centre of this activity are La Maison du Whisky in Paris and The Number One Drinks Company in the UK. They are building up distribution networks across Europe that are allowing more and more people to try quality Japanese whiskies (see their entries in the listings below for more details).

Come on America! You are lagging. All this activity in Europe and very little in the US. It is not as if there isn't any demand: more than a third of people coming to Nonjatta searching for Japanese whisky come from the Americas.

Anyway, on with the list:

La Maison Du Whisky is a real innovator in the whisky world. It belongs to the Benitah family and has been importing and distributing single malts in France for more than half a century. Their shop in Paris was established back in 1958 and they have outlets in Singapore and the island of La Réunion. They publish the French edition of Whisky Magazine and organise Whisky Live Paris. A short time ago they took over representation of Nikka whisky in Europe, when the Japanese company shut down its own representation in England. They also distribute Suntory (Yamazaki distillery, Hakushu distillery and the Hibiki blend) as well as the Ichiro`s malt range (Hanyu distillery) in France (see separate listings below).

The Number One Drinks Company is, along with La Maison du Whisky in Paris, one of the two most significant Japanese whisky importers in Europe. While La Maison has its Nikka connection, the Number One Drinks Company has a strong relationship with both the Karuizawa and Ichiro's Malt companies. It also does its own bottlings. It is run by Marcin Miller, the guy who set up Whisky Magazine, and David Croll, who publishes the Japanese edition of Whisky Magazine. Marcin runs the British end, while David is based in Japan. The company is represented in the on-trade by Gary Hazell whose email is gary@onedrinks.co.uk. They distribute to The Nectar (Belgium), Qualityworld (Denmark), La Maison du Whisky (France), Spirits AS (Norway), Whisky4u (Sweden) and, in the UK, to Berry Bros & Rudd, Drinkshop.com, Royal Mile Whiskies and The Whisky Exchange.

I was actually thinking about posting a comment asking this very question. Unfortunately, you left out American importers. Do you know of any?
Daniel said…
Hey Chris,

I'll email my former employer in the states. He owns that fine wine and liquor shop I mentioned, so he knows and/or can find all the details about US importers. (And his name is also Anton. I was shocked to see that on the comment above. (^_^))

I did some quick J-malt reconnaissance today. Ones I came across that I don't see on the site:
Hokuto 12 Pure Malt
Taketsuru 17 Pure Malt
Golden Horse "Chichibu" 8
Togouchi 18
Nikka "Tsuru" (the Aladdin white porcelain bottle)

Do you know anything about the last 3?

I also found the Yoichi "No-Year" which I hadn't ever noticed before. That's demanding a try now.

LM was closed today, so I'll check it out tomorrow. BTW, besides having the cheapest pricest I've found anywhere thus far, they also have point cards. They give the typical 1%, but every month they have days for 3% off, Double Points, and 5% off Wine. I'll be doing my monthly stock up next week.

Holy cow! Have you seen these insane bottle collection sites yet?! They make great reference sites.

http://www.ne.jp/asahi/miniature/smallworld/NewGalle.htm

And his links at the bottom to two more.
Nonjatta said…
The most intriguing link on that miniature site is the Korean whiskies. Is there a whole hidden world of Korean whisky, I ask myself?
Nonjatta said…
The Hokuto and the Taketsuru and the Tsuru are pure malts rather than single malts, so I have put those on the back burner for now. I have tried the Hokuto and referred to it in the Taketsuru 12 post, if I rememember rightly. Quite nice. The Chichibu sounds interesting and what is the Togouchi 18. That is new on me.
Daniel said…
I found the Hokuto reference. Just didn't see it listed in the side bar. The Takesturu 17 might be worth a try to redeem the name from the "frying pan 12."

I'll pick up the Chichibu and the Togouchi and do some writeups for you. I'm also curious about the Tsuru because of the wacky bottle, and even wackier price (~10-11man around here). I'll wait on that...

Great post, Chris. This site is becoming more and more of an invaluable resource. Nice work.

Dear Chris,

I live in Hong Kong and would like to buy some more Japanese Whiskies, but the only ones I can find over here are:

Suntory Hibiki 17 yo, Yamasaki 12 yo, Hakushu 12 yo.

Do you know any importers and distributors in Hong Kong, or any good stores in Japan who can directly export to me? I can clear the custom for them and I only need a few bottles.

Best Regards,
Alan

Hello,
I am looking for Japanese Whisky
in the United States. I Have five
retail liquor stores in the Caribbean and would like to add some of the finer Japanese whisky to our inventory. Would anyone have
a contact for a bonded supplier in Southern Florida as this is where many products for export are sourced.
Nonjatta said…
I am afraid I do not know of a supplier in that area. In fact, the US in general seems to have very supply at the moment. If you find out any suppliers then please let me know. Good luck.
